Abstract

This won best undergraduate poster in Chemistry.

In the literature, it is shown that thiosemicarbazone (TSC) ligands have antimicrobial effects that could be useful for drug design. This work consists of reacting pyruvaldehyde with multiple derivatives of thiosemicarbazide compounds through a condensation reaction to form said TSC. Each of these ligands are then prepared for NMR spectrum analysis. Four different NMR spectra are run (1H, 13C, C and N HSQC) to evaluate the purity and conversion of reactants to the desired products. Analysis of NMR spectra will assist in determination of the symmetry or asymmetry of these products.  Initial synthesis and in-depth evaluation of NMR data will be presented.
