Abstract

Vitamins C, vitamin E, selenium, carotenoids and bioactive compounds (BAC) are just a few of the compounds that are classified as antioxidant. Antioxidants are substances that help to prevent oxidative damage by scavenging the free radicals that occur. In doing so, antioxidants can help to protect the body from a wide spread of diseases and illnesses by maintaining a balance with free radicals. While an individual can consume an adequate amount of antioxidants from fruits and vegetables, some turn to supplementation. The overall research in on antioxidant supplements is lacking, nevertheless the trials that have been conducted reveal negative side effects or no change in the person’s health after consuming antioxidant supplements. Therefore, an individual should exhibit caution when consuming antioxidant supplements, and he or she should focus on consuming a variety of foods in the diet and the recommend daily servings of fruits and vegetables. This will allow individuals to consume an assortment of antioxidants and other nutrients, promoting a healthy lifestyle.
