Abstract

With the expectation for the global population to keep growing, many questions arise as to how to maintain a stable food supply in light of global food shortages. The effective use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and biotechnology could solve this problem. GMOs have already been introduced into the food supply but remain a controversial topic. Some uses of GMOs are: increased availability world wide, help with waste management, increase the nutritional value of food, reduce allergens, and increase disease fighting nutrients. With so many beneficial properties that can be applied to the global food shortage, why are people still against them? GMOs are still in their early developmental phase which means little is known about their future effects on the body, which causes concern in many. Many studies have been conducted but the information given to the public can often be confusing or limited. For the population to start trusting GMOs and embracing their use, future studies need to be transparent and relevant.
