Health Effects of Artificial Sweeteners
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to determine the health effects of nonnutritive sweeteners (NNS). There is a lot of controversy on the relationship of NNS on glycemic control, weight loss or gain, chronic diseases, early menarche, use during pregnancy, effect on breath alcohol concentration, and how NNS contribute to pollution. There were very conflicting findings within each topic. Some of the topics NNS were proven more harmful than helpful to the body and environment. Other topics shown that NNS can be helpful such as controlling glycemic levels and maintaining weight. In conclusion, there is more research needed. With all of the information available, consumers are left with many questions including the most important question on whether the consumption of NNS is safe. Individuals must use their discretion when consuming NNS and try not to consume in excess.Published
